Nature is God's Love in a Painting

I am forever obsessed with clouds. I don't think there is ever a day where I'm driving and I am not in total amazement at the sky. No matter if there is barely any clouds in the sky or if they're taking over, they are always spectacular and breath-taking and awe-inspiring. And any time I see them and I appreciate them, I give thanks to God for giving me such a view and the vision to be able to see them.

I'm sorry, but that's gorgeous. I don't think there's ever a time when clouds aren't incredibly beautiful. Even when it looks like a gray sheet over the sky, I can still appreciate that the clouds make the colors of the earth pop out and come alive. There are so many things about the universe in general that are breath-taking, and we don't appreciate it enough. The turquoise ocean, the bright fall trees, the red hazy mountains, an orange sunset, a night time sky full of milky stars.
When I think about these things, I become overwhelmed with God's presence. When we think about creation in Genesis, we often times choose to focus on the creation of us too much. What about when God made land and water and sky and animals. What did he have in mind? He made the earth ready for us to inhabit and he made it to be beautiful. Adam and Eve lived in a garden, a place where you appreciate nature.God made the earth for us to enjoy, and He did it out of his love for us.
I'm not trying to go hippy on you, but we do need to appreciate this gift more. In truly appreciating the world, we will come to have a greater respect for it. Remember every time you look at the sky or the trees or the ocean that God made this view for your eyes and your heart. He took the time to create for you a masterpiece in the day and a spectacular view at night. His works are never ceasing, always beautiful, and forever a physical and visual token of his love for us. Have you thanked God for the cool air you breath, the sunshine on your skin, the plop of acorns on the ground? Have you thanked God for the leaves you have to rake or the rain you have to walk through? Have you even tried to see the beauty in the inconveniences of nature as well? Every aspect of the earth is a blessing being rained down on us. Take advantage of it.

Being the Answer

Recently in my 1-year bible study plan (Yes, I’m keeping with it!), I have entered into the book of Acts. I’ve already read most of the New Testament before, however this book I never actually got to. When I was a “baby Christian” a few years ago, I wanted to feed my soul with what most of us want to be fed with: Matthew-John, Romans –Revelations. I skipped right over Acts and told myself I’d eventually get into it when I got done reading “all the good stuff”. Well, I’m to it now, and I have to say it is definitely part of the good stuff (and of course the rest of the bible is still good stuff too!). If you haven’t read Acts, it’s pretty much all about how the disciples grew the new faith of Christianity after Jesus was taken back up into heaven. It’s a book that highlights missions and what that means, and it’s fascinating and seriously encouraging to those wanting to further the ministry. “Missionaries” can look to this book and mold how they want to spread the good news.
Well, as I was reading the other day, I came to the last passage in Acts 8. Philip was being led by God to Gaza, but on his way he encountered an “Ethiopian eunuch”  (a very high official in the society) who was traveling back home from Jerusalem. Philip noticed that he was reading scripture and the Holy Spirit asked him to go and talk to the guy. So he walks up to the guy and asks such a bold question. He says “Do you understand what you are reading?”. I mean, that’s a bold question! Imagine someone from a different religion walking up to you while you are reading the bible and asking you if you even know what the heck that thing is talking about. But I very strongly believe that the Holy Spirit wasn’t only guiding his heart but his mouth as well and God knew exactly how to get to the heart of this man. The Ethiopian immediately opens up to this stranger and responds “How can I unless someone explains it to me?”. Wow. Let that sink in. If you continue to read, the Ethiopian converts to Christianity after Philip takes the time to teach him what he believes and why.
Why is that question so powerful? That single question motivates me to get up every morning and put a smile on my face even when I don’t want to. It makes me want to talk to strangers who don’t yet know Jesus and invest my time in them. That question expresses need that every day we as believers neglect. Someone out there is trying to know Jesus and to understand the Bible and talk to God, but they just don’t know how. I’m a believer in missions and going to other countries and teaching people who know NOTHING about Jesus, but I’m also a huge believer in reaching out to those who pass along our very own path who are crying out for help on the inside. To a normal passer-by, this man probably seemed pretty put-together. The guy is reading scripture! Who would have every thought he of all people needed saving? Unless someone invested some time into him, they may never see the front he had put up.
I know I have talked a good deal about missionaries lately, but I just want to hit home the fact that you don’t have to go to Africa to be a missionary. You can start right here, right now. If you aren’t just telling people about Jesus through words, but actions, you are a missionary. I encourage you to see those in need and look for those who may only have a need on the inside. Someone who maybe looks like they have it all together may be the one that is falling apart.

Romans 12:12-13  “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.”

NOT Just A Talk For Girls

So every few months, my church has something for the ladies in the youth group called "Girl's Night Out". Basically every time there is a different food bar (i.e. backed potato bar, hot chocolate bar, etc), speakers from ladies within the church, and some sort of video that is meant to empower us as women. In case you aren't the usual girl or you happen to be a man (yay for boys on blogs!), most girls have this really huge problem with always trying to be the best, and it completely wears them down. So a lot of the times, the videos shown are geared towards those kinds of girls. This time it was different.
I'm the unusual girl mentioned above. I don't think I'm too fat or too skinny. I don't think I'm super dumb or incredibly smart. I don't think I'm a loser but I don't consider myself Mrs.Popular. I think I am your average run-of-the-mill girl who you could find just about anywhere. I'm normal. Therefore, videos about not hating yourself do NOTHING for me. I don't hate myself, I have no reason to. So this video (which is posted below, go watch it!!!) reached out to meet every girl (or boy!) at the place that they are with themselves, and then starts to tells you what every single person on the face of earth wants to be told.
In case you don't know me, I have a boyfriend. We have been dating for a most of my high school career, we don't go to the same school, and we try to be as godly as we can be. When we go astray we fix it. We pray together. We talk about lessons learned in our bibles. We study together. We seriously do try. Well, he treats me like I am God's gift to mankind. He says something incredibly sweet that most girls would eat up and I reply with something goofy like "Shut up loser". (its an incredibly tender relationship, can't you tell?). Why I can't accept what he tells me, I never knew. But I knew I didn't like it and that something was wrong with me. And I wanted it fixed.
So I'm sitting there thinking "this is EXACTLY what my boyfriend tells me. On a day-to-day basis, I am told this. Why don't I react to it like this? Why do I not think of myself like this?" and it's like God just spoke to me right at that moment. He told me that I may not hate myself and I may be able to pick out a lot of good qualities about myself, but I don't see myself the way the ones I love see me. I can't be serious when my boyfriend says these things because I don't fully believe them. If I can't accept what my boyfriend says about me, how in the world am I gonna be able to accept what GOD is telling me?
So if you are sitting here reading this and are/were in the same spot I am/was, I want you to watch the video below and keep what I just told you in mind. Know that you are worth so much and that God's love for you is so unfathomable that it's stupid crazy. You are his absolute most precious thing, and he poured out blood for you. He gives you a clean slate every single day. He is always molding you, always forming you, always helping you. He won't give up even when you do. He won't stop guiding you. Also, when you try and make an impact on this world, don't give up. Keep on pushing. The bible is filled with all sorts of broken people who made a lot of mistakes but who changed the world because they put their trust in God and believed that no matter what the outcome is, He loves them and He is for them and HIS WILL IS BEST. Know that you are broken, but with God you are mended and you are beautiful.

My Official First College/Home Decor Purchase EVER

Yes, you read it right, I have taken another giant leap into adult hood... I'm purchasing seemingly boring home decor items... and I'm actually excited about it. I know, it's crazy, but the transition into a "boring adult" had to happen sometime, right? After touring my #1 college pick the other day, I came down with college decor fever. I mean, I got it BAD. In case you aren't as up-to-date on the new ways to decorate the dungeon also known as a college dorm, you probably need to check out Pinterest (you can follow me here). The things people come up with are just out of this world and it is seriously exciting me. In just a few short months I will be in my own little dungeon, trying to make it as comfortable as possible.. It's CRAZINESS. So purchasing this item actually seemed like a huge milestone in my life. It was almost like I was in a very nostalgic movie that had one of those really awesome voice-overs in the end where the hero makes some really incredible speech and you automatically feel empowered.  As I was standing at this make-shift register in a closing antique mall (while my item was being checked out by an old dude with his shirt unbuttoned to the waist...ick) my mind was making up my very own incredible voice-over. Yeah, I know, I'm getting deep! But it was a seriously cool moment. So, without further ado, here is my seriously awesome LAMP. It's vintage and versatile... It's perfection. Now, ending on a very cheesy note, my paths will always be well lit. :)

The Proverbs 31 Woman

Women everywhere, young and old, seem to constantly be making a statement along the lines of "I want to be a Proverbs 31 woman". I myself have put that out there into the Twitter world many times, making the point that I will always be striving to become that woman. In case you are unfamiliar, a "Proverbs 31 woman" is a woman that the book of Proverbs describes. If you haven't read it, I'll get you up to speed: this woman is super woman and us ladies need to accept the fact right here that we will never be this woman. Verse 27 points out that she "doesn't eat the bread of idleness", and I'll be the first to fess up: No woman can ever turn down a good source of carbs, am I right? ;)
Aside from the whole bread business, becoming this woman is a tough gig. A lot of times I think girls put it out there that they want to be more like this, but they're not really sure what all this means. Taking a look at the main points of the passage, we will have to:
-Constantly provide our husband/boyfriend with support and encouragement
-Put our hearts into everything we do, even if it means working long hours
-Always extend a hand to the poor
-Not fear when life gets hard
-Choose a respectable boyfriend/husband
-Not be needy
-Exude confidence in all situations
-Be smart, wise, and on point with our speech
-Seek God with all our heart, mind, and soul
I dont know about you, but to me that seems like a lot to keep up with constantly at first glance. It's actually kind of overwhelming. As women, we want to be a pleaser. It's actually in our God-given blood. God tells Eve that she will forever be submissive and seek approval from Adam. We want to make others happy. What happens when we can't keep up that end of the deal (which is often)? Something called an emotional break down happens, which results in no one on the face of the Earth wanting to come into contact with us because we're... well... crazy. The truth of the matter is that we will NEVER be able to be a Proverbs 31 woman all the time. We won't be able to hold it together. We won't always help the poor. We will snap at some people, ESPECIALLY husbands/boyfriends. We won't be confident or wise, and sometimes we'll get lazy. Something that's also in our blood? Failure. We will try to be this amazing lady and we will fail.
As disappointing as that seems, there is one thing on that list that doesn't have to fail. As long as we are seeking God and his will, we will forever be successful. In seeking God, we are forever noticing that we can't live up to these standards, but He can. He is our grace. If we keep our eyes on Him, all these other things will come along too. When we get weary and tired from trying to become this woman, we can rest in Him and know that it's okay. He is enough, He can do this, all we need to do is let him lead us. And suddenly being the Godly woman that Proverbs 31 describes doesn't seem so difficult.
So ladies, I hope and pray that you make an asserted effort to seek God and ask him to help you become this woman. Men (if you've stuck around this long), I hope and pray that you are seeking to find a woman just like this, because you need her. And I hope and pray that God uses you to become the hope that the world desperately needs.
Proverbs 31:30 "Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who loves the Lord is to be praised".

The Struggles of Being a Blog Baby

Just in case y'all (all 0 of you) were unaware, being a "blog baby" is quite the struggle. This is mainly because, well... my blog is more dead than Billy Ray Cyrus' career after the "Achy Breaky Heart" obsession died down. So in a very awkward way to get my name out there, I must post a link from Bloglovin so readers will know that my blog is open for business. In hopes that someone later on down the road may be scrolling down my page, I will attempt to make this post interesting and not just a waste of space for a link to appear on. So here goes nothing!
The Struggles of Being a "Blog Baby"
  • I am writing a post for no one to read. The whole point of a blog is to create posts for people to read... too bad I have no one to read my posts yet! It's quite awkward writing something when I know that potentially no one will read... it's almost as crazy as talking to yourself in public.
  • I feel like a homeless person in blog land. Instead of begging for change, I'm begging for followers.
  • If this whole thing is a flop, I'm gonna really regret this later in life. This is potentially the equivalent of all the embarrassing things you did in 6th grade that you now try to block out of your memory. Current generation: take a second to cringe at the thought of your Myspace profile. The Older Crowd: take a second to cringe at the thought of your hair in the 80s.

Despite the initial awkwardness and the blaring risk of failure, the entire point of this blog is to go beyond what you normally would. So here is my first leap of faith! I intended for this whole thing to be a form of ministry and a general pick-me-up, so I guess we'll see where God wants to take this thing later on down the road. To anyone who is reading this, I appreciate the support. I pray that it serves as a blessing in your life!

-Hope

That Crazy Voice Inside Our Heads

Do you ever have that feeling, that little tug at your heart, that you need to go and do something or say something, but you really don’t know what that feeling is all about? Some might say that your conscience is urging you to follow through with the act, others might argue otherwise. But I believe that the burning urge you experience is directly coming from God.
A section in Mark 5 speaks mostly of Jesus raising a little girl from the dead. But the bible also seemingly shoves another story in the middle of the one mentioned above that really can seem out of place. The story is of a woman who has been bleeding for twelve years and has gone to every doctor she knows, but none can solve the problem. In fact, the problem actually worsened. The woman was obviously terrified of what could happen next and was at a loss as to what the next step she could take would be. She began to hear stories of Jesus raising people from the dead, healing the sick, and even driving out demons. Suddenly she began to think “if I can just touch him, I will be healed”. So what did she do? She reached out and she touched him and was healed.
As I was reading this story the other day, I began to question what would make her think that she just had to touch him to be healed. Reaching out and touching not only a complete stranger but a celebrity goes beyond the saying
“going out on a limb”. After some deep thought, I reached a conclusion. The woman probably had that little voice in the back of her mind, the very same voice that you and I have from time to time, telling her that for some strange reason, all she had to do was touch Jesus to gain healing. That voice was and is God’s voice.
God knew that obeying this command would take faith. Put yourself in this woman’s shoes: Imagine if you knew Tom Cruise was due to be in town here in a while and you began to feel the urge that touching him would heal you of your _____ (insert disease here)… would you do it? Probably not! That’s awkward, humiliating, dangerous, uncomfortable. The woman probably thought that she was absolutely crazy for having these thoughts, but she had this undeniable burn (and I’m sure she knew that it was a burn God had given her) that she had to touch Jesus. So that’s what she did. And Jesus turned around and told her that because of her faith she was healed. That part always used confused me. What faith? The faith it took to listen to that little voice and to know that it was God and to follow through with what He was telling her to do. That’s a great deal of faith.
I come with this message to encourage you to listen to that voice inside of your soul, urging you to do the craziest of things. I have heard countless stories of the most awkward encounters that were inspired by God, all in order to be a blessing in someone’s day. You never know how God could use you, and if it’s anything like it was in biblical times, it gets far more ridiculous than simply touching the edge of someone’s cloak. But I promise that the initial craziness, whatever it may be, will be well worth the blessing in the end. All you need is the faith that tells you God will be glorified through the action.

“Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders. Let me walk upon the waters, wherever you would call me. Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander and my faith would be made stronger in the presence of my Savior.” –Oceans by Hillsong. I hope that you pray for the faith that will allow you to wander the craziest of paths as long as God’s voice is your guide, just as he was for the woman in the story.
